Preparing my Sunday school lesson last week reminded me of an old truth that I have always found fascinating. In Genesis 3:21 Moses writes, “And The Lord God made for Adam and for his wife garments of skin and clothed them (ESV).” God has just handed out the curses each individual deserved because of their sin, and then he makes this statement. The importance of this statement cannot be under stated. The implication can be made that God sacrificed an animal in order to provide a skin covering for Adam and Eve to cover up their shame. God sacrificed, and God provided. This sacrifice and provision points us forward to another sacrifice and provision that God would give his people. The sacrifice and provision that comes from Christ’s death on the cross. The rest of the Old Testament anticipates the coming of this messiah, which will bring an end to all shame and guilt once again. Thanks to the Gospel Project for reminding me of this great truth.
