In 1869 Southern Seminary elected C. H. Toy as their next professor of Old Testament.*  Toy’s compelling and engaging style of lecture meant that students loved him and were drawn to him.  When Southern elected Toy to the faculty, he defended traditional orthodoxy, the inspiration of the Bible, and the inherency of the Scriptures.  These convictions, however, would be short lived.  Toy began to hold to a division between the historical and divine elements of Scripture.  Toy asserted that the divine elements were inspired, inerrant, and authoritative, but the historical elements could be proven wrong by science.  For Toy the first conflict between science and the Bible came in the creation narrative. INTRODUCTION

Doug Pagitt serves as the pastor of Solomon’s Porch in Minneapolis, MN. He stands as a leader in the Emergent Church, and holds too many of the same beliefs and ideologies as Brian McLaren. In his book, Preaching Re-Imagined, he sets forth an approach to preaching called progressional dialogue. Pagitt, like McLaren and others in the Emergent Church, wants to have a “conversation,” instead of proclaiming the truths found in Scripture. The Gospel Coalition has a great article by Tim Keller on idolatry in a postmodern age.  In the article Keller discusses why defining sin as the breaking of God’s law is not the best approach in a postmodern world that rejects absolute truth. He says that presenting sin as an act of idolatry can better communicate what sin is and what sin does.  I would highly recommend the article to you.

If you were to ask people to define freedom, most likely you would receive a wide range of responses to your question.  Some might say that freedom is the ability to do whatever I want.  Some might say that freedom is the absence of all restriction.  Some might say that freedom is being released from an oppressive political regime.  And on and on the answers could come.  No one, however, would probably say that freedom is the presence of slavery and restriction.  Yet, this is exactly how the Bible defines freedom. Ten years ago today the sports world gave us one of the greatest press conference rants of all time.  Allen Iverson mentioned “practice” around 25 times in about 2.5 minets.  My top five press conference melt downs would be:

5.  Herm Edwards telling us why we play the game.

4.  Jim Mora talking about the playoffs and how his team played.

3.  Allen Iverson talk’n bout practice.

2.  Denny Green informing the world as to who the Bears were.
