Relevant Magazine has an excellent article discussing the relationship between faith and reason in apologetics.  The article concludes:

So while apologetics affirms that faith is more than reason, involving trust and relationship, it is not less than reason. Apologetics does not surrender faith on the altar of cultural reasoning or relevance. Rather, it seeks to show that the longings (and rebellion) of humanity as expressed in culture point to our great need for the salvation that only comes by grace through faith in Christ alone. Faith is what grounds apologetics. It trusts that the Bible tells us the truth about God, our condition apart from Him and the way to experience redemption.

We saw in the first part of this series that in this passage the Apostle Paul is seeking to teach believers what it means to walk in the Spirit.  He accomplishes this task by first showing them what a life lived in the flesh looks like.  In verse 16 Paul tells his readers that if they live by the Spirit, then they will not gratify the desires of the flesh.  Why? He answers that in the next verse when he writes, “For the desires of the flesh are against the Spirit, and the desires of the Spirit are against the flesh.  For these are opposed to each other, in order to keep you from doing what you want to do (v. 17 ESV).”  Paul makes it very clear that a life lived by the Spirit and a life lived by the flesh are antithetical to each other. Yesterday I listened to a fascinating conversation between D. A. Carson and R. Albert Mohler on the topic of tolerance.  You can get the podcast here or read the transcript here.  During their conversation Mohler and Carson noted that the traditional view of tolerance—that room should be made in the public square for all view points and it is okay to disagree—has been highjacked by the modern view of tolerance—that your view will be accepted in the public square as long as it does not offend anyone.   Continue reading “TOLERANCE ON TRIAL: A CONVERSATION WITH D. The American culture is rapidly becoming less and less of a Christian culture.  Even in the South, which has traditionally been called the Bible belt, people still call themselves “Christian,” but their Christianity has no influence on their lives.  These people know how to answer  questions such as “Are you a Christian”, and do so without thinking about what they are saying.  As America moves further away from Christianity, it is not simply moving into nothingness.  A postmodern, secular ideology is taking its place.  This postmodern, secular ideology can be characterized by its relativism and rejection of absolute truth.  In this culture preachers are charged with the difficult task of preaching absolute truth to people who reject the very notion of truth itself.  They should strive to accomplish this task by preaching expositional sermons which uncover the absolute truths found in Scripture.   Continue reading “WHY IS EXPOSITIONAL PREACHING PARTICULARLY RELEVANT FOR PEOPLE IN POSTMODERN TIMES? | @9MARKSONLINE”

Over the past few years I have had several different conversations with friends concerning the Christian cartoon VeggieTales.  In many of these conversations I have stated a problem that I have seen in the cartoons, namely that they teach moralism devoid of the gospel.  Parents frequently view VeggieTales as a cute, fun way to teach their children biblical principles.  They do not see the potential issues in the message the cartoon teaches.  Yes, VeggieTales does teach biblical principles, but it does so apart from a crucified and resurrected messiah.  I just came across this blog post in which the creator of VeggieTales repents of this very sin.  He says that he spent ten years teaching children to be better kids without teaching them the gospel.  Give it a read and let me know what you think.   Continue reading “VEGGIETALES CREATOR REPENTS OF MORALISM”
