Upon the conclusion of his nine month sabbatical in 2010 John Piper preached three sermons reflecting on several things he had learned about sanctification during his time off.  Editors brought these three sermons together in the book Sanctification in the Everyday.  In the book Piper is very honest about many of the sins he struggled with, giving some examples of particular situations where he had to battle with his own sinful nature.  Piper addresses several issues in this book.  This review focuses on three major concepts he explains.   Continue reading “REVIEW OF SANCTIFICATION IN THE EVERYDAY BY JOHN PIPER | @DESIRINGGOD”

Here is a link to a great article posted on the Desiring God blog responding to an article in the New York Times.  The NYT article criticized some conservative british politicians who want to reduce the time a woman can have an abortion from 24 weeks too 12 weeks.  The  criticism arises because within the first 12 weeks certain birth defections, such as Down Syndrome, cannot be detected within that time frame.  John Knight provides a firm but gracious response to the NYT article.   Continue reading “NO, YOU MAY NOT IMPLY THAT ABOUT BABIES WITH DOWN SYNDROME. « THE WORKS OF GOD”

Today I read one of my favorite passages in the Old Testament from Joshua 5:13-15.  The people of God have just crossed the Jordan river, and are approaching the city of Jericho.  The text says, “When Joshua was by Jericho, he lifted up his eyes and looked and behold a man was standing before him with his drawn sword in his hand (v. 13a).” Continue reading “JOSHUA 5:13-15”

I recently came across the following quote by John Piper that made me think about sin and the freedom Christian’s have in Christ from guilt and shame.  Piper writes:

Sin creates a blinding guilt that makes a person feel hopeless and despairing that they could ever be forgiven and included among the righteous. This is deeper and more terrible than slavery to the lure of sin. This is slavery to the blinding despair of sin.
You ask a person in this slavery to sin, “Don’t you realize that the promise of sin is a lie, and that you are on a dead-end street to destruction?” And amazingly, they may agree with you, and perhaps say something like, “I know, but it doesn’t make any difference. There is no hope for me anyway.” Here is a person not only in bondage to the lure of sin, but even more terribly, in bondage to the despairing blindness of sin’s guilt. They can’t make any progress in fighting the lure of sin, because they feel no hope in escaping the guilt of sin.*

In the last part of this series, I argued that the Apostle Paul was describing for his readers what a life controlled by the flesh looks like.  He explained why the desires of the flesh and the desires of the Spirit are against each other, and he warned them about living lives characterized by works of the flesh.  In this final post I want to talk about the Life in the Spirit.  What does Paul show us about what a life lived in the Spirit should look like? “God is most glorified in us, when we are most satisfied in him.”  This most famous quote from John Piper has served the church well over the past thirty years.  It has propelled people into missions, giving them the desire to see the nations declare the glory of God.  It has reoriented people’s theology, causing them to think in a more God-centered way and not a man-centered way.  And it has helped people read their Bibles better, once again leading them to read from a more God-centered perspective and less of a man-centered perspective.  I, however, wonder if many people have not misunderstood this famous quote.  I know that I have.  Not in a conscious way —Where I did not understand its meaning, but in the assumptions that I brought to my thinking about the quote.   Continue reading “RETHINKING JOHN PIPER’S MOST FAMOUS STATEMENT | @DESIRINGGOD”

Relevant Magazine has an excellent article discussing the relationship between faith and reason in apologetics.  The article concludes:

So while apologetics affirms that faith is more than reason, involving trust and relationship, it is not less than reason. Apologetics does not surrender faith on the altar of cultural reasoning or relevance. Rather, it seeks to show that the longings (and rebellion) of humanity as expressed in culture point to our great need for the salvation that only comes by grace through faith in Christ alone. Faith is what grounds apologetics. It trusts that the Bible tells us the truth about God, our condition apart from Him and the way to experience redemption.
